Donovan McNabb Phone Stunt Finishes Off Eagles Win

by admin on August 23, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles and Donovan McNabb have been through a lot of negativity this season, especially from Philadelphia itself. As everyone knows, Philadelphia wanted to run McNabb, Andy Reid, and most of the Eagles except for Brian Westbrook and Kevin Kolb out on a rail eight weeks ago. But instead, McNabb may be about to acquire Philadelphia back for good, as the Eagles threaten to go back to the Orderly Bowl.

Even if McNabb won’t say it, he has to be more relieved and satisfied about how he rose from the stupid in Philadelphia. The McNabb from four years ago certainly wouldn’t have picked up a phone on the opposing team’s sideline after clinching a win, after all.

As McNabb completed a first down bustle that helped lock up the Eagles 23-11 win over the Giants, McNabb got playful for once in his career. McNabb was caught picking up the phone on the Giants sideline, which is normally meant for communication between Giants players and coaches.

Instead, McNabb talked into it to mock the defeated Giants, a stunt usually expected from the likes of rival Terrell Owens.

McNabb was flagged for 15 yards, which by then had no sincere impact on the game. But the phone stunt could get McNabb fined before the Eagles go to Arizona for the NFC Championship Game.

McNabb and Andy Reid have never been the loosest of football personalities. But somehow, coming back to play for the NFC Championship, two months after they were both supposed to be fired, has done something to them.

McNabb did a little dance after the Eagles beat the Vikings last week, and played around with a phone this week after another upset win. Reid is growing a playoff beard, and isn’t as curt as he usually is in post-game press conferences.

McNabb’s phone stunt would have been another thing Philadelphia fans would mock and scorn him for, if the Eagles weren’t winning while he did it. Now, with the Eagles two wins away from the most unlikely Super Bowl championship since last season, McNabb can afford to do almost anything again.

However, after the way McNabb and the Eagles came from nowhere, they are no longer underdogs now. The Eagles used to be expected to get to the Super Bowl every year, and usually lost when they had the chance to do it.

Now, the Eagles are back in that favorite position, as they are three point favorites on the road against the Cardinals. Columnists like ESPN’s Gene Wojciechowski are declaring an Eagles Tidy Bowl berth a sure thing now.

Of course, Arizona has been feeding off getting no respect for three weeks now. And the Eagles will remember losing as heavy favorites to Tampa Bay and Carolina in NFC title game past, back when McNabb couldn’t get away with phone gags.
